9 False Internet Facts History

Topic of the today is False Internet Facts History . Let’s start to hunt the internet myths now!

Internet Facts History

1. First, the internet was invented for military use

Since the beginning of the internet era, the stereotype for this new technology was; “Internet was invented for US Army”. But in reality, it is not like that! Internet was invented before and then used in the military. Internet wasn’t invented, it’s only explored by the military.

2. Sharks are threats for the internet

It looks so weird but in 1987 there was an article about the cables under the ocean which says that it’s opened to shark attacks and they can cut the internet off by biting the cables.

This is an old myth but now we know that there is no incident reported yet that shows sharks are dangerous for the wires. Maybe it is a good topic for a good sci-fi movie or “Revenge of Jaws”.

3. Data centers are the invention of the modern era

We think that all the data centers are new and they are the consequences of modern technology. We all use the internet everywhere, we need more speed, data is the new king and because of all those, we built data centers to analyze everything. This is not true! It is true that data centers are developing but they are not a new technology.

The Colossus, the first programmable, electronic, digital computer of the world which was built in 1944, is the first data center of internet facts history . There were 12 Colossus machines that were built and they were used to decode the German Enigma codes in World War II.

4. Internet bandwidth has no limits

Simply, the internet is the service of companies, universities, and some other organizations. And these institutions have some resources that affect directly to the service that they are giving. These resources are like data centers, networks, cloud resources, servers, human resources, etc. All those factors change the bandwidth of the connection and even with a fiber optic cable, there is always a bandwidth limit.

5. Speed apps measure the connection speed of the internet

Downloading a speed test app is the first thing we do when we are not satisfied with our connection speed. But those apps or programs are not measuring the connection speed, they are measuring the capacity. People don’t know the difference between connection speed and capacity, accept the result and think that they have no problem with the connection. Capacity is the data that a connection can hold; not internet speed performance.

6. Passwords have to be long and complicated

Using complex and strong passwords is not a guarantee for safety when surfing on the internet. To protect from non-traditional and classical attack vectors, you need a large security scheme.

7. All your activities are being tracked by your ISP

It is not totally true to say that your ISP is tracking and saving all your activities on the internet. Every e-mail that comes from you, every request, the sites that you are visiting or the photo you looked…When you think millions of users, it’s too expensive to keep all the actions of every person. But it doesn’t mean that they don’t have information about you and your moves.

8.Most of the apps are free to use

There is a saying about the products; “If you don’t pay for the product; then you are the product!” It’s the same in app planet. You are using many apps for free but in reality they are not free. For example, during your free app tour, you get exposed to many ads and you have to watch them. And also your data when you are using the app is saved by some softwares and they are a great source for many products.

9. 10 Mbps connection means the exact browsing speed

No it’s not! If you have a data package that offers 10 mbps connection, it means it’s the maximum internet speed. Internet speed can change to distance to the server etc.
