Supercomputer to Create a 3D Map of the Universe

Large data centers and supercomputers have become a necessity for the storage and processing of this data as the use of data has increased tremendously. Especially large companies can use supercomputers quite efficiently. These computers assist in various calculations as well as artificial intelligence operations such as this new supercomputer to create a 3D map of the universe with AI.

A new one was recently added to these supercomputers by NVIDIA. The Perlmutter supercomputer is named after astronomer Saul Perlmutter. Perlmutter was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2011 for his discovery of dark energy. The first project that the computer will make a reality is to make a 3D map of the universe that has been discovered so far.

Described as the world's most powerful artificial intelligence supercomputer, Perlmutter was introduced at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) in California. According to the statements, Perlmutter will be used to improve scientific studies in many fields such as creating a 3D map of the universe and researching subatomic interactions for green energy sources.

One of Top 5 Supercomputers

The supercomputer is named after astrophysicist Saul Perlmutter. Saying that the system will consist of two stages and that only the first stage is available for now, Nvidia states that the supercomputer will offer artificial intelligence performance of about four exaflops for more than 7,000 researchers, even without including the second stage. The system will be completed this year with the inclusion of the second phase as it is expected to be among the top five supercomputers in the TOP500 ranking of High-Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmarks.

It will enable new breakthroughs in many fields

The supercomputer with 6,159 Nvidia A100 Tensor Core GPUs will create the largest 3D map of the universe ever. The computer will process data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), which can capture up to 5,000 galaxies in a single exposure, to create the 3D map.

The process of preparing a year's worth of data for publication, which would have taken weeks or months in previous systems, can be accomplished in as little as a few days with Perlmutter. Its ability to combine artificial intelligence and high-performance computing will lead to breakthroughs in fields ranging from materials science and quantum physics to climate modeling, biological research, and much more.

Supercomputers are very important for research laboratories as well as large companies. Supercomputers have incredible hardware compared to the computers we have as they have little to do with the computers that are used in large studies in research centers, universities, and companies around the world. Therefore they provide services in many fields such as space, health, and science in general, instead of the tasks of computers that we already know.
