What Is Cisco Unified Communications Manager?

It is very important that communication be effective and secure in the business world. Sharing the information in the right place at the right time facilitates the distribution of business processes. Some database services provide error-free management of IP phones and call decisions. With the given configuration commands, the nature of the communication is preserved and is not broken. The Linux-based communication server supported by Cisco Systems that maps IP numbers to phone numbers and integrates voice, video, data and mobile applications is called Cisco Unified Communications (CUCM) or Cisco Call Manager (CCM).

It doesn’t allow sharing unnecessary files on the server with TFTP (Junk File Transfer Protocol). A CUCM cluster can have a maximum of 20 servers, while only one publisher server is allowed in the cluster. The publisher contains the information in the database. Up to eight subscriber servers can be in the same cluster, as only four of the subscriber servers can perform active calls. If more than four subscriber servers are used in a cluster, the additional servers are being dedicated as backup servers in case the active subscriber server is unavailable. The other 11 servers in the cluster may be responsible for a variety of services, including TFTP and media resources. It consists of a CUCM license, license server and license manager. While the license server component runs only on the publisher server, the license manager runs on each server.

After connecting an Ethernet cable to an IP phone, the procedures are as follows:

  1. IP phone requests IP to DHCP servers on the network.

  2. DHCP server transmits the phone IP and the IP address of the TFTP server.

  3. Since the TFTP server is directly connected to the Communications Manager, the IP address of the server directly becomes the Manager. Thus, it will automatically register to the Manager along with the phone number.

  4. The phone is now available. If the TFTP IP provided by the DHCP server doesn’t belong to the Call Manager (if it is not set), the IP address of the Communications Manager must be manually entered into the phone.
