Twitter Starts to Label Coronavirus Related Content with 5G

Many false claims about Coronavirus and 5G spread rapidly on social media, and as a result of these rumors, protests turned into a movement that especially caused physical violence against telecom engineers and 5G infrastructures in England. Although social networks such as Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter say that fake content that can cause such physical violence will be removed, it did not seem possible to prevent it.

Upon increasing claims over the past month, Twitter announced that it would create a label system for content that links Coronavirus and 5G technology. Users who hit the label after seeing the content will read that there is no scientifically proven link between Coronavirus and 5G.

Statement by an official on Twitter about the issue to Business Insider reporters;

“As we've said previously, we will not take enforcement action on every Tweet that contains incomplete or disputed information about COVID-19. Last month, we announced that we are introducing new labels and warning messages to provide additional context and information on some Tweets containing disputed or misleading information related to COVID-19,”

How were the rumors spread about Coronavirus and 5G?

In the first period of the COVID-19 pandemic, various accounts start to share a piece of fake news about 5G and vırus link. They were claiming that 5G transmitters cause the spread of the virus and in a short time, this myth shared by many famous people and influencers.

However, although there was no academic or scientific evidence about this claim, it was not logically correct either. The slightest example is that no new transmitter is required for 5G, which means it works with the transmitters used in the 5G 4.5G. 5G can say that it is the software-enhanced version of 4.5G, like the new version built on old technology.
